Triathlon at 7000′

Posted in Racing by Brian Schaning

Today was the Mountain Man Triathlon in Flagstaff AZ. I have been living in AZ since june, and this is actually the off-season here, but a short trip up north leads to a completely new world. I have never been so happy to have 65degrees, clouds, and a little rain, after dealing with 115+ over the past couple of weeks. I must say that the area is one of the nicest areas for a triathlon, great roads in the mountains and fabulous views of 12,600′ Mt. Humphreys, the tallest peak in AZ. I was not really expecting to be very competitive today being that my training has been limited due to my clinical rotation.

The day started off with a good warm-up of a 15min. run and a 15min bike. Before heading to the water i decided to make a last second stop at the rest-rooms (which turned out to be a very good decision), but this put me a little behind schedule and rushing a bit. After a little help from a fellow competitor I was all Zipped into the Helix and into the water with just enough time for a few warm-up strokes. (If I do have one complaint about the race, its the rocky bottom of the lake which left my feet all cut up…. but i guess thats not the races fault). At the start I took a few strong strokes to stay out of the madness and found a good set of feet to follow in second position. I stayed there comfortably for the whole swim til 500m to go when i decided to pick up the pace a bit. I came out of the water in first, not a bad start to the day.

I knew the bike would be a different story though, as that has whats been the most limited in my training. I got beat out of transition so I was second heading out on the bike. I sat about 20-30seconds back for the duration of the bike, closing it down to 15seconds at the turn-around, but just didn’t have that extra gear. The course was mainly undulating with 2 climbs requiring the small chainring (maybe that was the 7000′ talking). It was also frustrating bc I was losing ground on the downhills, I think this is because I was without race wheels and was just riding the training wheels. But I’m not making excuses. I was just happy that no one passed me during the bike. It was hard not to get distracted biking with beatiful views of the San Francisco peaks, and the valleys we were biking around. The lake that the swim was in used to be really big and long, almost 15miles (I think), but because of the current drought in AZ it is only 23% filled. So you could see where the lake used to be but was now just open fields.

Onto the run I was sitting about 25-30second down. Here it was pretty much the same story, holding steady but not able to close it down. At 1.5miles into the run we hit a huge climb with switchbacks that climbed 300+ ft. It was brutal. This was one of the toughest 10k’s I have ever run. After the turnaround the guy in the lead had an extra gear and I just wasn’t able to counter. I came in 1:20 down for 2nd overall.

Overall, a pretty good day, especially since I wasn’t expecting to do that well. I ended up with a 2:02:39. I definatley recommend the race to anyone if you are in the area. Sorry for the lack of pictures, but hard to take pictures of yourself when your flying solo at the race.

Pikes Peak ½ Ironman and a $100 bill??

Posted in Racing by Tim Hola

I try to be creative with my training these days.  Colorado has so much to offer when it comes to getting in good workouts and in unique, scenic places.  This past Saturday I did a little something different than my usual routine.  I always thought it would be the ultimate challenge to do a “Pikes Peak ½ Ironman” so other than the swim, that’s just what I did.  Pikes Peak is a 14,110 ft peak just west of Colorado Springs, and about 73 miles from my house.  DSCN1061.JPG
I left my house on my Trek TTX at 5 AM, loaded up with plenty of PowerBars and PowerBar Gels and headed south to the base of Pikes Peak in Manitou Springs.  I estimated it would take me about 3 ½ hours, so I had Nikki and the boys plan to meet me in town at 8:30 or so. The ride was DSCN1064.JPGjust wonderful.  It was a scenic, quiet, and challenging ride all along the front range.  There was a little under 2,000 feet of climbing to the ½ way point in Monument, then it was mainly down hill into Manitou.  Perhaps the most exciting moment during my ride was that I found a brand new $100 bill on the shoulder of the road!  Sweet!  I stuffed it into my jersey and rolled into Manitou where Nikki met me and I did a quick transition into my run gear.  I used my favorite running shorts by Profile Design.  They have the best pockets and breathable material I have ever used.
I ended up riding 73 miles in about 3:40 and was feeling good for the run.  I started up the mountain, and almost immediately I could feel my body working harder and harder.  It was great, but it was really hard.  It’s these types of workout sessions that build the strength for long distance training and make me feel more prepared for the run in an Ironman.  I made it to the summit in 3:32 and drank 20 oz of H20, 20 oz of Powerbar Endurance, and 5 gels.  Total workout time for the day was 7 hours and 17 minutes.  It’s perhaps the hardest workout I’ve ever done.  At the top, I was greeted by Nikki and the boys!  I refueled a little, OK well a lot (by the way, the PowerBar recovery shakes help you recover in an instant!), and then it was Nikki’s turn.  DSCN1070.JPG
Nikki is training for the Pikes Peak Marathon so she began her 3-2-1 workout: Starting at the top of Pikes Peak you run down 3 miles and back up 3, down 2 and up 2, down 1 and up 1.  The boys did great and we all had a fun day.  Hopefully this will get me ready for the Boulder Peak triathlon next weekend!

It is now official…

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”
-Eleanor Roosevelt

I am now officially registered for event #6 in the USMS National Long Course Swim Championship.   This means I am one step closer to the challenge my oldest daughter presented to me earlier this year.

So, how has training for the 200 fly been going?  Quite honestly…I feel like a first-time marathoner who is less than a month out to race day, and has yet to complete a half marathon!  I really wish I had specified ‘short course’ versus ‘long course’ because in my training I have realized one thing…I like walls.

To make matters a bit more humbling, Lauren and the other kids from her swim team will be timing our events that morning.   Great…this is the opportunity for Lauren to experience what it is like to have to sit in the heat and watch your loved one swim, and a perfect occasion for Lauren to yell and scream at me to ‘kick faster!’ while fully aware that I am already going as fast as I can.

I only hope that cameras are barred from the pool deck.

Happy Training.

Presentation for DC Multisport Club

Posted in Racing by Tim Hola

This past Monday night I did a talk for the DC Multisport club here in Highlands Ranch, CO.  There were about 30 people that came to hear me talk about elite age group racing in the real world.  Topics I covered were work/training/family balance, motivation, kids in triathlon, nutrition, and training/racing tips.  I had presented this topic once before last fall at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, but talked a little more about balancing familyDSCN1024.JPG with triathlon as well as giving our fabulous Timex products a little demo. I showed the group how the Bodylink works and an example of the graph that the Trainer software produces.  I also discussed how Powerbar’s new C2MAX performance system works www.powerbar.com and talked about Tri Swim, my hair & skin care product sponsor www.tri-swim.com It was a great time and hopefully everybody walked away with some new ideas on how to approach their training and racing with their everyday lives!  Attached are some pictures.   Enjoy.
