Running 20 miles on snowshoes

Posted in Racing by

Happy New Year everyone.  I decided to kick off the New Year with a hard workout, something unique and very challenging.  It was a 20 mile snowshoe race in Leadville, CO.  It was 22 degrees at the start and blowing snow.  It started at 10,300 feet and we reached an altitude of over 11,300 feet.  I‘ve done this race a few times before, and it never gets easier.  There were about 65 of us that started and most finished within the 7 hr. time limit.  The start was single track in the woods, then at mile 2 we started crossing the ice on Turquoise Lake, and let me tell you, it was not very fun.  The wind & snow was blowing right in our faces for 30 min straight.  After we were in the middle of the lake, I looked back and saw the line of people running behind us through the snow.  It was like something out of some extreme winter expedition show on the National Geographic Channel.  The picture below shows what it looked like.  Seem like fun?

My legs were doing well until mile 14 or so when my feet seemed to get heavier and heavier from the ice and snow building up on my snowshoes. I learned after the race that I actually got blisters from the ice rubbing along the side of my shoe, yes ice caused my blisters!  I placed 11th with a time of 4:21. I was glad to be done and even more excited to have a huge Chipotle burrito that night with the family.  Hope all of you are having a great start to your New Year!
