Triple Bacon, Bacon Bits, Double Triple By Pass

Posted in Training by

I am not talking fast food or heart surgery. These are the names of popular training routes in Colorado.

In preparation for my 50 mile Running with the Devil, I ran my first 30 mile training run the day the High Park Fire started. 5 hours of running I watched the devastation take place. At that point the fire was so new, no one know the cause

The Bacon Strip is a 10 mile rolling hill course located about 10 miles northeast of where I live. When you look north, south, east or west, the terrain looks like a strip of Bacon, they even have a 10 mile event and serve bacon at the end of the race. The weekend of July 7th was a rest week and I ran 1 bacon (10 mile loop) and 2 bits (4 mile loop)

The weekend of July 14th and 15th I road up in the mountains. I was fortunate to be able to purchase a friends Double Triple by Pass entry. I have not ridden outside since mid April so I was a little nervous/anxious about riding 120 miles on back to back days with 10000 elevation gain.  I had done the TPB one way in 2009, east to west, and bonked at the top of Loveland Pass. After completing the DTBP this year, I realized I was unfit and/or over-trained in 2009 because this year I crushed the climbs, both directions. My ultra running has created strong bike legs.
