Ironman Lanzarote 3.0 – Change

Posted in Racing by

Groningen – Back home… Home after two weeks at the island Lanzarote and finishing the Ironman. Home with the cats and Hilde. It feels great to be back, but at the same time I feel a bit sad because time really flew the last two weeks. Lanzarote is a magical place and really did it’s magic on me.

Before heading to Lanzarote everything was clear in my mind. Two weeks of training to get back on track. And as dessert the Ironman the last Saturday of those two weeks. With the injuries I have had, the race would be no more than another training set and to see where I would be in my process to get ready for the second half of the season. Enjoying the race and experimenting with some things. It all went a bit different….

With this idea I got on the Ryanair plane in Eindhoven. Training and racing, nothing more, nothing less. But within a week things changed. The magic of Lanzarote got to me, my body and my mind. My thoughts about training were gone with the wind and everything turned into race mode. Nothing wrong with that, if preparations had been solid. But they were not, with the injuries I had…

With the new mindset the first week flew by and training was good. The second week became a taper for the race on Saturday. Ooooh boy, my body felt stronger and stronger. But my mind started playing tricks on me when the purpose of the two week stay changed from training to racing. Fortunately, Bart Klein was with me. Together we worked on the mental parts of racing Ironmans. The doubts of Ironman Arizona got back to me the first couple of days, but faded with help of Bart.

Slowly my confidence grew. And things got clear for me. There were some old habits and the ideas how to race Ironman were far from right. It became clear to me, that this was the time to change! Change these habits. Change these ideas. With a body that was still far from perfect, there was nothing to lose and give it a go.

Ironman Lanzarote 0.4 – Ready, sort of…

Posted in Racing, Training Camp by

Groningen – This might be the last post before leaving for Lanzarote. There are just a couple of things left. Squeezing in that last training set, a shrinking TO DO list and some last minute packing. Even though it is only Friday, I am ready to go, sort of…

Training: Check!
Training is and was good. The weather has been in my favor (and yours too, except from the farmers) the last couple of weeks. Perfect conditions to get as ready as possible at home instead of some place warm. And that is a comfort.

TO DO list: Check!
The list in my previous post has shrunk dramatically. One item remain: the song for race day. Even the more and more and more things have been dealt with. My travel hours will be perfect to get that last thing fixed too.

Packing: Check! Well sort of…
Packing is and will always be a last minute thing for me. Sunday morning will be devoted to running around brainless trying to find everything needed for the trip. I have given up hope to bring everything, because as usual something will be forgotten and that is why I can say: ready! Well, sort of…

Ironman Lanzarote 0.3 – Easy

Posted in Racing, Training Camp by

Groningen – There is almost steam coming from my ears! Excitement is growing every minute. My flight for Lanzarote leaves in only 6 nights! The adrenaline is already flowing everywhere. And my mind turned into sport mode again. Let the party begin! Well…

A couple weeks back I posted something on twitter, saying something like! It is better to recover a month too much, then one to too few! Great words by Cesar Beilo. And they really are true, but at the same time so hard to see when the adrenaline starts to flow and race day come closer. My knee injury is just behind me and that little red carpet is already out again. The only thing I do during when it come out, is to go for it!

But that is not the way to get to Lanzarote. The knee started hurting again during this afternoon’s run session. Of course I backed off immediately. I clearly remembered Cesar’s words at the moment. It was a warning to just take it easy! Listening to the body is so important, especially when the mind is tricked by all the thoughts of the race. The goal is clear: make it in one piece and finish Ironman Lanzarote!

Ironman Lanzarote 0.2 – Travel assistance needed…

Posted in Racing, Training Camp by

Groningen – As like with every camp, race of vacation there is too much to do in that last week. I got no clue where to start, so at the moment I am enjoying a coffee instead and thinking of what to do. Fortunately, everything I could possibly forget it buyable, can be shipped, or brought by those who leave later than me. Nonetheless, a little stress is building…

So you might wonder what it all is what I still need to do? Well, a lot! And as I have mentioned in one of my previous blogs (check Kasemier.eu or my facebook page) there it is quiet a challenge to get it all figured out. I just can’t do and think straight. So at one point I might be looking for a pair of socks, while come across my running shoes and that reminds me of getting a second pair of shoes too. In the mean time forgetting about the socks… And this story goes on and on…

And the list continues to grow and grow. Perhaps a travel assistant would be the cure for my overflowing mind… But what also helps is writing all of it down, like I have done so many times! A little part of the list is below and perhaps you can all help me get these things done….

  • Ordering Powerbar products for training and racing.
  • Getting my Orbea checked and race ready.
  • Doing the dishes and clean the house.
  • Print Noorderlink on my race suit at Promotex.
  • Paying for my SRM and hopefully getting it back before the end of the week.
  • Finding a song for the flow on race day.
  • Deciding what to bring with to stay within the 20kg weight limit of Ryanair.
  • Figuring out how to get to Eindhoven airport with all my stuff.
  • Putting in all the training to get as ready as possible for the race.
  • Buying tons of sunscreen.
  • More… More… More… More…

Ironman Lanzarote 0.1 – Here I come!

Posted in Racing, Training Camp by

Groningen – I am still at home. Tickets are booked for my flight to Lanzarote. Training improves on a daily basis. The weather is optimal. Training feels awesome. Confidence is building with each stroke in the pool, push on the peddles and stride while running. But for some reason there is still something in the back of my mind asking me what it is that I am doing.

By no means would I have expected to be at this point in preparation for Ironman Lanzarote. Actually I thought it would take till summer to get back to running. In February they told me the knee had both a torn meniscus and ligament. My world came to a full stop at that time and now only a short two months later Ironman Lanzarote is showing up at the horizon.

But there is this little bit of doubt in the back of my mind. Asking me if I am ready to race? I don’t know… Can I know? No, only race day will tell. In February I didn’t dare dream about this. But now I am getting ready to rumble! And that makes me smile and forget about that little bit of doubt. It will be awesome. It will be hard. It will be another part of my dream coming true! What more can you possibly want? Ironman Lanzarote here I come!
